3-E1.0.1 Do you know how supply and demand affect a business? When you buy something at the store, you are making a choice. Your choice has an impact on a business's choice to increase the supply of whatever you bought. Your choice to buy also increases the demand for whatever it is that you bought.
3-E1.0.3 If you are going to make money in a business, where you choose to locate is very important. Before electricity, businesses such as mining and lumbering located near natural resources like rivers to harness the energy of the flowing water.
3-E1.0.4 An entrepreneur is someone who sees an opportunity to make money. He or she will often start a business. The business creates jobs for other people. Entrepreneurs combine natural, human, and money resources to produce goods and services for other people.
3-E1.0.5 The word diversify means to have a variety. Recently, Michigan has been trying to encourage a wider variety of businesses to come to the state. This attempt to diversify the kinds of business in Michigan should help more people to have jobs in this state.
4-E1.0.5 To specialize means to dedicate yourself to doing a couple of things really well. Did you ever notice how kids in high school specialize in one or two sports instead of trying to play all sports? Because they specialize in the sports they are good at, they play that sport even better. Businesses try to do the same thing with the people who work for them. A business can produce more of whatever it makes if it helps the workers specialize in the jobs they are good at. Specializing in business is called "division of labor." An assembly line at an automobile factory is an example of division of labor.
