Keyboard Climber
Keyboard
Do you know what all the keys on the keyboard do? Let's start with letters, shift key, space bar, backspace and delete. Open up Microsoft Word and type the alphabet in upper and lower case with a space in between. Try out the delete and backspace on 1 or 2 characters.
Press the enter key and watch the cursor drop to the next line. Let's do the numbers row, first without a shift, then shift with a space in between. Do you know the names of the symbols above the numbers?
Special keys are next. Press the enter key to go to a new line. Can you do 'single' and "double quotes"? How about a semi-colon; and colon:? Can you do a comma, period. and question mark? How about a forward slash / and a backward slash? \ Finally, do a plus+, minus- and equals= sign. Put spaces between them all.
Press the enter key, then indent once with the tab key. Turn on the Caps Lock and notice the green light that comes on above DELL. Type your name in caps. Now hold down the shift key and do the same thing. Notice how the shift key does the opposite of normal when you have the Caps Lock on.

Logging onto your Computer
Did you ever notice last year that the computers were ready to go right when you walked into the computer lab? That's because the older kids logged your computer into the network for you at the end of their morning classes. This year, you will learn how to log onto the computer all by yourself!
Here's a picture of your computer BEFORE you login. This is called the login screen. Click on it to enlarge it.

Getting to the Login Screen
You will be using your keyboard to login. To make the login screen appear, there are 3 secret keys. Two of the keys you need to hold down. Find the CTRL and ALT keys on the lower left hand of your keyboard. Can you make bunny ears with your left hand? Now use those fingers to hold down the CTRL and ALT keys at the same time. Go ahead, give it a try!
Now find the Delete key. This key is further to the right side of the keyboard in the group of six keys. Use your right pointing finger to press it and then let it go. Go ahead, give it a try!
So far, we still haven't been able to get the login screen. Let's try combining all 3 keys. While you are holding down the CTRL and ALT keys with you left bunny fingers, press and let go of the Delete key. See if you can get the login screen to come up.

Login Card
Great Job! Now that you know how to get to the login screen, you will be given a card that looks very much like the login screen. The only difference is this card will have the secret username and password for logging onto your computer. Be very gentle with these cards. Please do not bend these cards in any way.
Talk about Kindergarten, on separate PCs, show 1 before ctrl alt del and another PC after ctrl alt del; Display & talk about the login card & keyboard; show wrong way, spaces, CAPS, show right way, ctrl alt del movements, student big screen volunteers, show log off, student shows they can do ctrl alt del at my screen before I give them vstudent card to practice on own; students repeats as much as possible, login/logoff until free time; those who do it at least 2X get to help others

Volume Control
Can you find this icon in the lower right hand corner of your screen? Do you notice the difference in how loud it is when you slide the handle up and down? If the handle is at least half way up and you still can't hear anything, make sure the mute box is blank. If you turn the volume off or down, make sure you put it back to its normal position. Usually we keep the handle close to the middle, but you set it to where you think is the right amount of volume for everyone; not to high, not too low.
