Software Applications (CC.2)
3-5-2.CC.2. identify how different software applications may be used to share similar information, based on the intended audience (e.g., presentations for classmates, newsletters for parents)
Your intended audience for the parent / teacher conference is: your parents! Today you will practice roll playing the conference with a fellow classmate.
Software applications come in different forms like newsletters or presentations or even this website. Presentations tend to have more multimedia than newsletters do. Newsletters tend to be printed or viewed on your computer screen, while presentations usually are NOT printed (printing would lose the multimedia affect).

I Can
I can share similar information using different software applications.
I can be aware of who my intended audience is.

Sharing Information with words
If you wrote a story, let's say about why your family needs a dog. You could put your story in a newsletter using a word processor like MicroSoft Word. MicroSoft Word will let you add pictures, but sharing information this way would be mostly with "words" only.
Sharing Information with words AND multimedia
You could also write your story and put it in a presentation. Slideshows like PowerPoint, Movie Maker and Go!Animate are all examples of multimedia presentations.
Media can mean any kind of computer file. The most interesting media use sounds and pictures. The pictures can be still or moving. Sounds can be voices, nature, music or pretty much anything you can hear. When you combine more than one kind of media, it is called "multimedia".
The boy on the video below chooses to use a multimedia presentation on why his family needs a dog! Do you think the boy would have been as effective sharing his "information" with only words? Take a look and judge for yourself!

Popcorn!
Are your parents interested in making the pop corn during lunch hours on Thursday, January 5, 2012? If so, have your parents see Mr. Thelen to sign up! Your parents can sign up to be either an official popcorn popper or an alternate. Alternates would only pop the corn if the official popper cancels.

5th Grade - Fall Conferences
Your projects will not actually be completed until the Spring parent / teacher conferences. However, feel free to open up your projects and teach your parents a couple of things that you learned this year!
Feel free to put your parents in the driver's seat. Show them how to get to voycomp.com and your grade level schedule page. Here are two shortcuts to the lessons on Movie Maker and Digital Tall Tales that your parents might be interested in; since neither of these projects will be done until spring, the shortcuts will let your parents what the projects are all about.
To show your movie maker project, you will need to be logged in as yourself; but to show your Tall Tale, just log into Go!Animate.
Cameras will be available if you want a photo taken with your family. You can use the photo in your project too if you like! Just check the whiteboard to see which camera is assigned to your class on the night of the conferences.
Here's another idea: take your parents to the 5th Grade Schedule page and let them click their way through the various web pages. This will give your parents an idea of the things you are learning!
Use the secret code to get into the 5th Grade Life photos!
Scroll back up and play the 30 second Dog Multimedia PowerPoint. Your parents will love it!
Please put the screen back to this page and scroll it to the top for the next student when you are done. You can get to this page from your schedule or from the Parent menu. Thanks!
