3-5 Reading Decisions
3-5.CT.1. use digital resources to access information that can assist in making informed decisions about everyday matters (e.g., which movie to see, which product to purchase)
Decisions in Reading
Reading is an every day matter that can help us in making informed decisions. Today's reading decisions are very important. Your choices will help you and your teacher decide which books are just right for you!
Today you are going to be taking the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI). Today's testing conditions are similar to those we use for the MEAP. There will be no talking or eating. If for some reason you are unable to finish, you can come back in on make-up day to finish.

Lexiles
This assessment will give you a reading that is measured in Lexiles. A Lexile indicates the reading difficulty of a book. Knowing your Lexile reading level will allow you to better understand your reading ability and challenge you to improve your Lexile Level. Here is a Lexile chart for different grade levels.
BEST Effort
I encourage each of you to give this assessment your best effort so you will get a true measurement of your reading level. The SRI is not timed, so there is no reason to rush. Everyone will receive a different number of questions; so everyone will finish at different times. Take your time and focus on your own score. Do not worry about what others are doing. If someone finishes before you, it is probably just because you were given more questions than they were given.
Books you like to Read
During September and May when you first log on, you will be asked to choose 3 types of books that you like to read. Your choices will help to create a list of books just right for you! These choices do NOT have any affect on the questions for the assessment today. These choices only affect what will be on your book list when you finish the SRI test.
Practice Questions
After you choose the types of books you like to read, the computer will prompt you to follow directions. Read each passage and choose one (1) answer. If this is the first time you have ever taken an SRI, you will be given a few practice questions. You will know that they are practice questions because it will say "Practice Test" in the upper left hand corner. The official SRI Test will show your name in the upper left hand corner. After you have finished the Practice Test, begin the official SRI Test.
3 Skip Max
I am not allowed to pronounce any words for you or tell you what a word means. If you do not know the answer to a question, you are allowed to skip it. You may skip as many as 3 questions without the test shutting down. If you think you know the answer to a question, it is best to answer it. Questions continue to get more difficult as you progress through the test; so use your skips only on questions you really do not know the answer to. The number of skips you have left is shown in the bottom right hand corner of your screen.
VIEW your book list
When you finish the SRI, you will see the VIEW button. If it is September or May, Mr. Thelen will print the list of books created that are just right for you. These books are based on your Lexile score and the type of books you chose at the beginning of the SRI. Just leave your screen at the page with the view button. Now you can sit back, relax, and read the book you brought.
If it is a winter month, click on the orange button that says Quit and close out with the X on top of the right page. The winter month test is the second of 3 SRI tests for the year.

Login to SRI
You will be given a sheet with your username and password on it. Be very gentle with this sheet. At the end of your SRI test, your Lexile score will appear on your computer screen. Record the Lexile score in correct box in the table at the bottom of your login sheet.
I will pass out pencils and the sheets. I will collect your sheet and pencil before you leave today. Your homeroom teacher will keep the score sheets. After you finish the SRI, you may read a book, but you may NOT go to other things on the computer.
Do not move around or disturb others taking the test in any way. Feel free to wear the head phones to increase your concentration. Take your time and do your B.E.S.T. !

Tumble Books
Reading is an every day matter that can help us in making informed decisions. Today you will decide which Tumble Books are just right for you to read. To do this, you will need to know your Lexile reading level. Find your latest Lexile score from your SRI login sheet. Use this score to find a range of Tumble Books to choose from.
Goal: Raise your score by 100 Lexiles (or more) by the end of the year!
Choose a book, have fun reading it and then we will play the game that matches your book!

SRI Score 2
Today's Goal: Raise your Lexile score by 50 points or higher than SRI Score 1 from September!
While raising your score is important, what is even more important is that you really try your B.E.S.T. If you don't quite raise your score by 50 points, don't worry too much about it. Your teachers at Voyager are here to help you become the best at reading as you possibly can!
Remember:
1. 3 skip max
2. Write your score down when finished.
3. Quietly read your book at your seat when you are finished. Do not disturb others.
4. A teacher will log you out of SRI and check your score.
5. Everyone will receive a different number of questions; so everyone will finish at different times. Take your time and focus on your own score. Do not worry about what others are doing. If someone finishes before you, it is probably just because you were given more questions than they were given.
